Babushka Party - Zoe's 2nd Birthday

Zoe's Mum Tamara bought the complete Babushka Party printable pack by Jess Walsham (Joyess Designs) for Modern Printables to help celebrate her daughter Zoe's birthday. Tamara made a truly amazing cake that looks just like Jess's Babushka design. Tamara shares with us some photos and tips too:

Printable Pack: Babushka Party by Joyess Designs for Modern Printables

Cake: Made by Mum, Tamara who says, "I was running really short of time so opted for the SuperMoist chocolate packet cake from Betty Crocker. I used an extra-large rectangular cake tin and two packets to ensure the cake was big enough. Chocolate Ganache icing from my local cake decorating shop Cake Decorating Solutions went on top, followed by the royal icing. I used pink, red and white icing to make the body and face and then used a small ‘icing pen’ for the white spots and the eyes and mouth. It was a lot easier than I thought!"

Party Food: Made by Tamara and her family and friends. Parfait (meringue, whipped cream, fresh fruit, jelly and chocolate flakes). Chocolate cupcakes with pink frosting and a freckle on top. Strawberry and raspberry jellies in small plastic cups. Mixed fruit (grapes, melon, strawberries, peaches) in small plastic cups. Muesli cups with layers of muesli, yoghurt and strawberries. Gingerbread men, honey jumbles and fairybread. The adults were served muesli cups (layers of muesli, yoghurt and strawberries) and bacon and egg rolls.

Decorations: From the printable Babushka Party pack, Tamara used the Babushka bunting with plain coloured paper spacers, attached the Babushka gift tags to the goodie bags, and sent out the editable Babushka invitation. Tamara says, "The kids and I really enjoyed making the bunting and garland. Hole punching and sticking are so much fun! I also bought some pink and white lanterns from the two dollar shop which were hung up outside."

Tips From Tamara:
1. I made far too many fruit cups and jellies. The kids’ favourites were the cupcakes and the fairybread!
2. Try to organise family or friends to come over early to help with the final setup. A lot of the food was only able to be prepared that morning, so it was great to have help. They arrived 30 mins before the party (and I was still in my PJs)!
3. I had bought a gorgeous new dress for Zoe to wear at her party, but of course she wasn’t interested in wearing that one and wanted to choose her own!  I was quite happy to let her pick – as long as she had a good time! Her brother also chose his outfit – superman of course!

Something Special: Tamara says, "We organised a fairy to come to the party as a special treat. Zoe just loves fairies! Our fairy entertained the kids for about an hour with fairy dust, fairy wishes, a puppet owl, dancing games and face painting. The older kids (3-8 year olds) were totally enthralled. Some of the younger kids were a little scared and hung back at the start, but most joined fairyland before too long!"

Thank you so much Tamara for sharing Zoe's special day with us!

More Halloween decor ideas

Not only can you use Pilgrim Lee's excellent Halloween Party printables pack for a shindig, but also to decorate your house for trick-or-treaters.

Here we re-purposed the treat box as a round paper lantern for the steps (insert a tea light in a glass jar).

We also attached the round toppers to bamboo skewers and lined the pathway through the garden to the front door.

And of course the bunting can be used at your front door as a retro scary welcome.

All you need now are your treat bags and you're ready for the hordes of kids to descend!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween treat bags tutorial

Here's a great way to take a bunch of candy and make it look super-cool using Pilgrim Lee's great Halloween place card printable. Simply download the printable design, customise the message, print on paper stock, cut and fold. There are 6 different designs on one printed page. Fill a clear gift bag (from an art store) with candy, and staple the folded card to the top. I used a brad (also available from art and scrapbooking stores) as I don't have a stapler at the moment (don't ask me how that is possible).

They look great, and you can print them out year after year with different messages. Happy Halloween!

Little Man Party by Jess Walsham (Joyess Designs)

Jess Walsham (Joyess Designs) created this amazing Little Man Party printable pack, inspired by her own son's second birthday party. This great colour combination of yellow and black is so different and there's not a pirate, nor dinosaur to be seen. It's fun and sophisticated at the same time.

Party: Two-year-old boy's birthday party

Theme: Little Man

Cake:
Layer cake of chocolate and vanilla cakes iced with vanilla frosting. The word TWO on top is made from fondant icing left to set overnight. Cake topped with mini bunting made using printable Little Man mini flags.

Party Food:
  • Donna Hay macarons
  • Cheese and vegemite moustache sandwiches
  • Ham, mayonnaise and rocket moustache sandwiches
  • Moustache cookies on sticks made by me with fondant icing
  • Chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting
  • Popcorn (of course!!)
  • Puffy Dogs (cocktail frankfurts in puff pastry)
  • Chicken and mushroom and beef mince pies from Pie Face
  • Banana lollies, Malteasers and pineapple chunks
Decorations: Little Man Party printable pack by Jess Walsham (Joyess Designs). The pack includes:
1. Editable invitation (4 per A4 page)
2. Blank thank you cards (4 per A4 page)
3. Bunting banner (3 designs)
4. Blank tented placecards (4 per A4 page)
5. Popcorn Labels
6. Drink labels (water and juice)
7. Blank tie-shape gift tags
8. Five round 2-inch topper designs (15 per A4 page)
9. Mini bunting/food flags (6 designs)

Jess used a mix of vintage and quilting fabrics for the bunting at the party but you can create this look using paper bunting flags from the printable pack. Black and white striped cupcake wrappers. Yellow striped paper straws.

Favors:

Jess made moustache-shaped chocolates on sticks using a chocolate mould and melts. Some were milk chocolate and some were peanut butter-flavoured mmmmmm yum! The boys all received a Business Time Tee with the ties appliqued on the front and the girls received a Vestie Tee in girly colours from Joyess Designs.

More photos over at Bondville and Joyess Designs blog.

note: a few of the actual printables in the party pack have been adjusted slightly and extra printables added (such as paper bunting).

Strawberry Party by Lisa Tilse (the red thread)

Wow! I thought I'd start off Modern Printables with a bang and a gorgeous birthday party by Steph Bond Hutkin from Bondville for her daughter's 4th birthday. This party features the Strawberry Party printable pack by Lisa Tilse from the red thread in Sydney.

Party: Four-year-old girl's birthday party

Theme: Strawberries

Cake: Chocolate Coconut melt and mix cake from Donna Hay Modern Classics Book 2 with vanilla buttercream frosting and topped with strawberries and a round printable strawberry topper.

Party Food: Strawberry parfait (whipped cream and ricotta, strawberry jelly, meringue, strawberries), Strawberry jellies set in mini tea cups (topped with whipped cream and a strawberry), Chocolate fondue with strawberries for dipping, Strawberry smoothies in mini juice bottles with paper straws, Vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting and topped with a strawberry.

Decorations: Strawberry Party printable pack by Lisa Tilse (the red thread) for Modern Printables.com. The pack includes:
1. editable invitation (4 per A4 page)
2. Blank thank you cards (4 per A4 page)
3. Three bunting banner designs (3 per A4 page)
4. Cupcake wrappers (3 per A4 page)
5. Blank tented placecards (4 per A4 page)
6. Blank gift tags (8 per A4 page)
7. Five round 2-inch topper designs (15 per A4 page)

The round toppers were used to top the birthday cake, and used to make garlands using ribbon and baker's twine. Garlands were strung vertically from windows and horizontally around the party venue.

Favors: Rather than a goodie bag, each family was given a strawberry plant, repotted into a square decomposing planter, tied with a chequered ribbon and gift tag.

More photos over at Bondville.
